FAQ

Questions employers ask us

How much does it cost to hire an apprentice in London?

Mainly their wages. The apprentice minimum wage is £8.00 an hour from April 2026, though many London employers pay more. Employers that don't pay the levy pay nothing for training if the apprentice is 16 to 24, pay no employer National Insurance for under-25s, and can get a £2,000 hiring payment.

Who gets the £2,000 apprenticeship hiring payment?

Employers that don't pay the levy, for an apprentice aged 16 to 24 who starts on or after 1 October 2026 and joined the business no more than 90 days before training starts. There's no application. It's paid through the training provider, with the first payments from January 2027.

How long does it take to hire an apprentice?

Usually three to six weeks from agreeing the role to the apprentice starting. That covers advertising, shortlisting, interviews and the paperwork.

Can a small business hire an apprentice?

Yes. Most apprentices work for small businesses. You need a real job of at least 30 hours a week in most cases, someone to supervise, and enough work for the apprentice to practise what they learn.

Can I hire an apprentice over 25?

Yes. There's no upper age limit. Employers that don't pay the levy pay 5% of the training cost for apprentices aged 25 and over, and normal employer National Insurance applies.

Do apprentices need English and maths qualifications?

Apprentices aged 19 and over no longer need English and maths qualifications to complete their apprenticeship. Apprentices aged 16 to 18 still work towards them if they don't already have them.

What does the training provider do when I hire an apprentice?

EEV Training helps write and post the vacancy, shortlists candidates, checks eligibility for funding, drafts the training plan and apprenticeship agreement, and delivers and supports the training until the end-point assessment.

Can I use an apprenticeship to train someone I already employ?

Yes, at any age, as long as the apprenticeship teaches them significant new skills. Their job and pay stay the same. The £2,000 hiring payment only applies to new hires.
